Butte County Cal Fire is fighting the Swedes Fire as a team.
While crews are battling the blaze on the front lines, volunteers are helping on the phone lines.
“We fielded approximately 2,500 hundred calls in just the last two days,” said Butte County Cal Fire Information Specialist Mary Ann Aldrich.
During major emergencies like the Swedes Fire, call center volunteers work 12-hour shifts, seven days a week.
Dena Jardin has volunteered with Cal Fire for the past five years; and this year is one of the busiest seasons she’s ever seen.
“A lot of times you hear a lot of fear in people’s voices, especially if they've never been in a disaster area,” she said. “A lot of people want you to make a decision for them whether they should leave their home or not. Sometimes people just need reassurance, a comforting voice and information.”
The phone number for the call center is 530-538-7826.
