LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Long Beach police are asking for public help in finding the killers of a policeman who was gunned down nearly 40 years ago.
Police on Tuesday said they have new information about the Dec. 13, 1975 slaying of Officer Franke Lewis.
They say his killers may have fled in a 1960s white Fleetwood Cadillac or a mid-70s, blue Fleetwood with a black top.
Officials are offering $60,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Lewis, a 28-year-old father of two, was returning from work around 3 a.m. when he noticed a disturbance near his home.
Police say someone was beating up a schoolteacher, possibly in an attempt to steal his car. When Lewis arrived, he was shot in the face.
Teacher Denis Gitschier, now retired, says Lewis's intervention saved his life.
