LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles prosecutors say a nurse's assistant who tortured her young adopted son and daughter has been sentenced to as long as life in state prison.
Ingrid Brewer of Palmdale was sentenced Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court after pleading no contest last year to two counts of torture. She must serve at least seven years before being eligible for parole, but could spend life in prison.
Deputy District Attorney Theodore Swanson says Brewer's 7 and 8-year-old children were found huddled under a car in their pajamas in sub-freezing temperatures a few blocks from home in January 2013. They were scarred and blistered and said they had been locked and bound with zip ties at times in separate bedrooms.
Brewer had adopted the children despite complaints about her foster parenting.
