It's official, Butte County Sheriff Jerry Smith is retiring and Undersheriff Kory Honea will take his place.
Honea was running for sheriff unopposed and was planning to take the leadership position come January of 2015, but he will step in about six months earlier than expected, as sheriff smith retires May 23rd.
Honea told Action News Now outside Supervisors Chambers that, "I am feeling prepared. Sheriff Smith has been great to work for. He has given me the opportunity over the last four years to really run the day-to-day operations of the department and... I'm looking forward to it."
Sheriff Smith told Honea about his plan to retire early, and asked the Board of Supervisors to appoint Honea to the position early to ease the transition.
The board passed that motion this morning unanimously.
