The Butte County Sheriff’s Department has charged 47-year-old Marvin Ray Markle Jr. today for the 2001 murder of Shirley Ann Pratt, according to the department's press release.

On October 12, 2001, the Sheriff’s Department received a phone call around 7 a.m. that a woman’s body was lying in the roadway in the Oroville Wildlife Area near Vance Avenue in Biggs. The deceased woman was later identified as 41-year-old Shirley Ann Pratt of Biggs. An autopsy confirmed that Pratt died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Since 2001, the investigation into Pratt’s murder has been ongoing, and "several years ago" detectives began receiving information linking Marvin “Ziggy” Ray Markle Jr. to the murder investigation. Advances in DNA technology assisted in the development of the investigation, according to the release.

Today Markle Jr., who was currently serving a 90-day jail sentence for a probation violation, was charged for the murder of Pratt. He remains in Butte County Jail without bail.
