The Butte County Board of Supervisors put off a proposal to add e-cigarettes to county smoking restrictions Tuesday.
The American Lung Association supports the idea of treating e-cigarettes the same as regular cigarettes and Shasta County, Oroville and Paradise have already implemented their own restrictions. Chico will consider a final adoption of similar rules next month.
Electronic cigarettes vaporize nicotine in a liquid solution, and the smoker inhales vapor rather than tar and other harmful compounds in tobacco. The battery-operated devices, which are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, can be bought online and in convenience stores and smoke shops.
Critics say electronic cigarettes are a gateway to smoking, but others say the products are not nearly as harmful as traditional tobacco products.
No word when Butte County Supervisors will take up the issue again.
