The holiday season is upon us and with it comes an increase in crime.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office is reminding us to be vigilant this holiday season, by taking steps to make yourself and your home safe and secure during the holidays.

In addition to locking your doors and windows, they say leave your outside lights on at night and use a timer for your indoor lights if you plan on heading out of town.

One suggestion people often don't often consider, cautiously disposing of the packaging your gifts come in.

Packaging in your garbage can act as an advertisement to thieves, of the new and potentially expensive gifts you've received.

Lastly they say be sure to keep your wallets and receipts in a safe place.
