Butte County making changes to waste services after complaints

After receiving hundreds of complaints about changes to county waste and recycling services, Butte County officials announced that they will restore weekly services to Chico area customers.

On March 1, the unincorporated areas of Butte County transitioned from multiple waste and recycling haulers to just three, but the changes were met with heavy resistance. Among the complaints, residents said their bills were going up, but weekly services were being reduced to every other week.

After meeting with representatives from the hauling companies Monday, county officials announced that in Recycling Zone 6, the area adjacent to the City of Chico, Waste Management and Recology will return to weekly pickup at the rates already established.

County officials also addressed concerns with inconsistent billing, claiming that Waste Management inadvertently included surcharges that were not supposed to be included under the new franchising agreements.

According to the county, Waste Management is in the process of correcting bills that included the surcharge, and anyone with an incorrect bill or question should call the local Waste Management office at (530) 345-1281.
