The West Nile virus is still on the rise in Butte County and that has Butte County Health officials concerned. The number of human cases of West Nile virus in Butte County is already higher than last year.
According to health officials, the virus activity typically continues through October. With at least another month to go, Butte County residents are strongly encouraged to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
In Butte County as of September 10, 2013, 42 dead birds, 29 mosquito pools, and 50 chickens have tested positive for West Nile virus.
Since 2004, 7 people have lost their lives to West Nile virus in Butte County. Officials say due to the increased activity, Butte County residents are at an elevated risk for West Nile virus.
