Butte County has erected several billboards around Chico and Oroville reminding residents that new, more restrictive medical marijuana growing laws are now in place.

‘Measure A' was passed by Butte County voters in November and the new restrictions became began Thursday. The new law requires that medical marijuana grows must be contained to a single space, with the length and width of the space not exceeding a ratio of 2:1. A full recap of the new Butte County growing requirements can be viewed here.

In December, Butte County Supervisors unanimously passed a nearly half million dollar budget to enforce the measure. Along with the new restrictions the penalties for growing violations have increased. Violators can be fined as much as $50 a day for their first violation and $1,000 a day for each subsequent violation.

County officials are hoping the billboards will help people learn and abide by the new growing restrictions.
