A Butte County sheriff's deputy is suing the county alleging harassment, discrimination and retaliation because of race.

Michael Sears, who has been a deputy with the county for nearly 8 years, alleges in his complaint that other deputies and his superiors participated and others failed to prevent the use of racial epithets and other racist acts, including hanging a toy panda bear from an office.

Sears, who is mixed race, asks in the suit for a trial by jury, but does not specify damages sought.

County officials are not commenting on the lawsuit at this time.
