Butte College, Chico State farms among nation's best

The farms at Butte College and Chico State rank among the best in the nation according to the journal Best College Reviews.

The journal ranks Butte College's farm fifth out of the nation's top 20 university farms, ahead of those at UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, Yale University, Duke University, and others. The journal ranks Chico State's farm the nation's 19th best.

Farms were ranked based on size, campus and community integration, sustainability, student use and use in teaching.

According to the report, Butte College offers an 80-acre farm including an organic fruit orchard and vineyard. Butte College has a long history of sustainable agriculture, offering training in sustainable agriculture, and establishing a portion of the farm as organic certified as far back as 1990.

Chico State's farm was the second largest surveyed, providing 800-acres of varied farmland supported by 15 full-time staff members and 35-40 students. Animal units include a beef unit, an organic dairy unit, sheep & goat unit, and a swine unit, and are operated by a staff technician, a lead student manager and three or four student employees.
