Butte College was named today as one of 55 colleges under federal investigation for the handling of sexual violence and harassment complaints.
The list was released today by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. "We are making this list available in an effort to bring more transparency to our enforcement work and to foster better public awareness of civil rights," Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon said.
This is the first time the department has released a list of all current investigations. No case specific facts, or other details about the schools under investigation were released.
The release of the list comes just two days after The Obama administration issued a statement warning colleges and universities to stop "turning a blind eye" to sexual assaults on campus.
Butte College has released the following statement about their inclusion on the list:
“In late 2012, Butte College was notified that a complaint had been received from the US Department of Education. Butte College promptly responded and cooperated fully with the Education Department on its investigation.
Al Renville, Butte College Vice President of Student Services and Title IX Compliance Officer said “We are awaiting the final outcome of the investigation and we are doing everything we can to protect the privacy of those involved in this off-campus incident,”
