A Burney man was arrested in the parking lot of a church Friday armed and ‘acting bizarre,’ the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday.

Robert Waltz, 53, was in the parking lot of Word of Life Church where he was reportedly ‘walking around the parking lot holding a knife,” a witness reported. A U.S. Forest Service officer heard the call and contacted Waltz.

The officer said Waltz was in the parking lot “with a large drill bit, trying to dig holes.”

During a search of the suspect, the officer found several various-sized knives concealed within his jacket. The suspect also alerted the officer to a .22 caliber handgun, which was detained.

Waltz was confirmed to be a convicted felon, prohibiting him from possessing firearms. During a further search of Waltz, a small amount of methamphetamine was found in one of his pockets.

Waltz was also found to have three misdemeanor warrants for his arrest. Waltz was placed under arrest for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felon in possession of ammunition, a felon with a concealed weapon, and armed while in possession of narcotics.

Waltz was transported and booked into the Shasta County Jail.
