An apparent homicide investigation is underway after a charred body was found by volunteer firefighters in a creek bed in rural Glenn County.
Firefighters responded to a small fire in a dry creek bed in Artois, near County Roads D and 33 around 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The body was discovered by fire crews as they worked to put out the fire.
The investigation is in its early stages and sheriff's officials say it could take a while before the persons, identity, or even gender is determined.
A California Highway Patrol Helicopter has been capturing images of the scene, and a forensic pathologist along with a Department of Justice crime scene specialist are on scene to assist with the investigation.
Sheriff's Officials say they suspect the body was driven to the creek bed, and in an effort to preserve potential tire tracks, County Road 33 will be closed for the future.
