A man who broke into a Redding home this morning while the residents slept, was arrested after he tried to flee by jumping into the Sacramento River.
Police arrested William Allan Evers shortly after 7:00 a.m. after he allegedly entered an occupied Redding home through an unlocked door. The residents woke up to Evers standing in their bedroom.
One of the victims Elizabeth Ames, 47, flashed a handgun and demanded Evers to leave. He refused and demanded clothing, stating "He was in charge" and would assault them. Another victim, Robert Molthrup, 48, attempted to grab William Evers but he pulled away and began to walk around the house.
The victims described William Evers as acting strangely, as if he was under the influence of drugs.
The residents gave Evers clothing, hoping he would then leave the residence, but he continued to roam the house. At one point he entered a bathroom and removed several bottles of medication.
Evers heard the sound of police sirens and fled out the back door, jumping into the Sacramento River.
Shasta County Sheriff's Officers arrested Evers about a quarter mile down the river, and after being treated for hypothermia he was booked into Shasta County jail for first degree burglary and robbery.
