The man suspected of accidently starting the Bully Fire in Shasta County now faces a manslaughter charge.

The Shasta County District Attorney's Office has filed a felony involuntary manslaughter charge against 37-year-old Freddie Alexander Smoke III. Smoke was allegedly operating a large rental truck to deliver soil amendments to an illegal marijuana grow site in the area of Roaring Creek Road and Sargent Road in Ono and the fire started when Smoke operated the truck off road, in rough, grass covered terrain. The trucks exhaust system contacted the dry grass and ignited the vegetation.

CalFire officials found the body of a severely burned man inside the fire lines on Wednesday July 16 and have decided to pursue the manslaughter charges in addition to charges of recklessly causing a fire and marijuana cultivation.

Smoke was arrested and posted bail after the original charges were filed, but new warrant has been issued for his arrest and officials are trying to locate him. Smoke has ties to Redding, Sacramento and Los Angeles, as well as Indiana and Illinois. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
