LOS ANGELES (AP) - Firefighters have doused a fire that severely damaged a Mormon church near a Los Angeles freeway.

It took about 185 firefighters about two hours to knock down the blaze that began as a brushfire Tuesday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says the blaze began shortly before 3 p.m. near State Route 2 and burned a quarter-acre of brush before catching the church eaves.

More than 185 firefighters battled flames that roared through the attic and part of the roof collapsed. Authorities say nobody was inside.

Two firefighters were injured. One was in good and the other in fair condition.

Congregation member James Jenks tells KABC-TV that about 1,000 people attend the church and they'll have to find someplace else to worship.
