A road grader being used for construction work on private property clipped a two inch gas line just before 10 a.m.
It happened on property owned by the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, at Monte Vista Avenue and Autry Lane.
Helen Wilcox, Golden Hills Elementary and Las Plumas High schools were notified to keep staff and students inside as a precaution.
PG&E crews made repairs and the danger was lifted a half hour later.
"Some people look at it and say this was a routine call, but it's not because you have 2 inches of gas under pressure, said El Medio Fire Chief Rusty Olhausen. "Fortunately the wind was not a big factor so the gas was going straight up."
The shallow gas pipe was apparently installed decades ago, when building codes were different. Construction crews say the line was buried much closer to the surface than current codes would require.
