It was a brief but emotional court appearance Wednesday as an Oroville man listened to the serious charges he faces while his pregnant girlfriend he allegedly beat lays in a Sacramento hospital brain dead.
Butte County Superior Court Judge Steven Howell did not allow news cameras to record 43-year-old defendant Olabaku Jones during his first court appearance in Oroville today. But as the judge read off a serious of felony charges and enhancements, Jones cried out to the court to quote ... "just inject me now ... "
Jones was arrested Monday after he called 9-1-1 to report that his 33-year-old girlfriend slipped and fell in the shower earlier that day at their Spenser Avenue home. But Deputy District Attorney Robert Thomas III said Jones "pummeled" his girlfriend leaving her with severe head injuries. He added that the victim, who is also in an early-term pregnancy, is now brain dead as her family decides what to do next.
Jones did not enter a plea. He returns to court Wednesday. He remains in custody on $1 million bail.
Jones was convicted of sexual battery in 2005 and sentenced to four years in state prison. He was also convicted of armed robbery in San Joaquin County.
If convicted under the current charges, Jones faces at least 15 years in prison. But that all changes if his girlfriend dies.
