More than half a million Americans have pledged to boycott Target following the big-box company's announcement that people are welcome to use whichever restroom they identify with.
The company made the statement in a blog post more than a week ago.
The American Family Association responded by starting an online pledge not to shop at Target while the company upholds this policy.
A spokesperson for the AFA claims that the policy opens the door for sexual predators to invade the privacy of potential victims.
However, a representative for Target says they stand by their transgender-inclusive policy.
While the boycott is gaining support online, many Chico locals say they support Target's decision.
Maya Rand, program coordinator at Stone Wall Alliance Center in Chico says, "when a corporate chain, especially a nationwide chain like that makes a stand or a policy, it kind of affects how everybody sees it... they set the tone or precedence for other businesses. They've done a lot for LGBTQ rights".
