Boy drowns in Gridley irrigation canal

A young boy drowned this afternoon after Butte County Sheriff's Officials say he became stuck under water for nearly 30 minutes.

The incident happened when a group of kids were hanging out in an orchard behind a home on Archer Avenue, where the was swimming in the canal. The 12 year old boy got his left leg stuck in a tube. Friends and neighbors had attempted to pull him out, but struggled because of the suction.

The boy was pulled out around 3:30 p.m. after being stuck for over 30 minutes. Medics performed CPR and he was rushed to Gridley hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Local teens reportedly swim in the canal regularly, and investigators with the Butte County Sheriff's Office are working to gather more information.
