The Butte County bomb squad was called to the Chico Police Department parking lot Tuesday afternoon after a man brought a suspicious envelope to the police station.
The scene was roped off and after the bomb squad investigated the area was deemed safe around 4:30 p.m. Bomb experts said the device was not an explosive.
The entire incident lasted approximately 3 and a half hours and led to the closure of Humboldt Road between Fir Street and east of the police department for about two hours.
Police say the envelope was found by a local business owner who was concerned about its contents. The man originally brought the envelope inside the police station lobby, but officers immediately ordered him to take it outside.
Lieutenant David Britt says if you ever find a device that looks suspicious or dangerous, do not touch it or move it. The best thing a person can do is call authorities and have them come to you.
