The Boles Fire broke out on the southeast side of Weed Monday afternoon and spread very quickly, fire officials say the blaze is currently burning 350 acres and is 15 percent contained, but has already destroyed at least 100 structures.

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. on Boles Street near the Boles Creek apartments and then spread rapidly, damaging Weed Union Elementary School, the Holy Family Catholic Church, and countless other homes and businesses.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph caused the fire to spread north, jumping Highway 97 and prompting evacuations in Carrick and Lake Shasta. As of 10 p.m. Cal Fire officials are reporting the forward progress of the fire has been stopped and the evacuation order for Lake Shastina and Carrick has been lifted.

Hundreds of people remain under evacuation in Weed, the Red Cross has set up evacuation centers at Yreka Union High School and at Mt. Shasta High School. An evacuation center at the Siskiyou County Fairgorunds is no longer accepting evacuees because the site is being used as the Cal Fire incident command post.
