Shasta County sheriff’s deputies have recovered the body of a possible drowning victim from Lake Shasta.

The Sheriff’s Office boating safety unit was called to the area north of Moley Cove on the Sacramento River arm of Shasta Lake around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

A group of boaters told deputies that a family member, Dayna Lynn Waltrip, 32, of Santa Cruz had been swimming near their rented houseboat and failed to surface.

Dive team crews recovered Waltrip’s body around 6:25 p.m. under about 25 feet under water.

Officials suspect Waltrip drowned, but the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy.
