Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told Action News Now that the body found in a burning car near Chico Wednesday morning was that of a man.

Investigators are still working to determine if it was the owner of the vehicle, which is registered locally.

Honea also says the death is considered suspicious.

The burning car was reported by a passerby in an orchard near Durham Dayton Road and Marian Avenue at about 1:30 a.m.

Firefighters discovered human remains after extinguishing the flames.

Sheriff Honea said the investigation is just getting started and the body was badly burned, so it will likely be identified through dental records. He did say there are no new missing persons reports in Butte County.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

At this point the death is not believed to be linked to the burned body discovered in an orchard near Hamilton City on May 24th.
