California Highway Patrol has released the name of the bicyclist who was hit and killed Thursday afternoon, allegedly by a 17-year-old in Cottonwood. Mariana Contreras, 61, was riding her bike northbound on Happy Valley road on the right shoulder, when the teen driving a Ford Mustang at an undetermined speed drifted to the right and struck Contreras from behind, according to the CHP.
Investigators say the impact threw Contreras from the bike and up onto the Ford Mustang, inflicting fatal injuries. The teen then reportedly fled the scene to a residence in the Cottonwood area.
A CHP helicopter located the Mustang and officers responded to the residence, where the teen was arrested on suspicion of Hit and Run, according to CHP.
Contreras' husband was notified and drove to the crime scene to speak with officers. CHP is not releasing the name of the teen charged in connection with Contreras' death, and investigators have not said if alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision.
