KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - No city has ever hosted both the summer and winter Olympics. But now, Beijing will be the first.

The Chinese capital has been awarded the 2022 Winter Olympics, taking the games back to the city that hosted the summer version in 2008.

The International Olympic Committee sees Beijing as a secure, reliable choice.

After four European cities withdrew from consideration because of the high cost of staging the Olympics, the only options left for the International Olympic Committee in choosing a host for the 2022 Winter Games were Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan. In its usual secret ballot the IOC chose the Chinese city, despite its lack of natural snow.

Residents of the city can look forward to clean air and better traffic for the month the Games are staged. In 2008 strict restrictions were put into place by the government on factories and private drivers.
