The Torres Community Shelter will be operating out of First Baptist Church on Palmetto Avenue in Chico for several days due to a bed bug infestation. The regular location at 101 Silver Dollar Way will be vacated while it is being fumigated to eradicate the bugs. Executive Director of the shelter, Brad Montgomery, says the bed bugs were discovered a few months ago, but after several attempts to get rid of them they are now having to take a more aggressive and expensive approach. He also says the treatment will basically exhaust the shelter's current reserve fund for any future maintenance on the building. To avoid another infestation, the Torres Shelter will not be accepting donations of either books or anything made of fabric until further notice. They can still take donations of items that are wrapped and/or brand new and hope to soon set up a processing station to help with the problem. If you would like to help the Torres Shelter with donations, they can be sent to the shelter or through their website chicoshelter.org. The shelter will be shut down from October 14th-16th for the fumigation.
