The Butte County Sheriff's Office has launched a new website designed to help investigators find leads and close unsolved cases.

The first case to be featured is that of murdered Chico State student Marc Thompson. Thompson's body was found September 3 inside a burned car on Oroville-Quincy Highway, near Mountain House. An autopsy has shown Thompson was murdered, but authorities aren't saying how.

Family members are struggling to understand why anyone would want to kill him. They say Thompson was an active member in the Chico community and a voice for change.

The new website, www.buttecrimesolver.com, has been launched in response to the cries for answers from Thompson's friends and family. On the site people can look at pictures of Thompson and learn about the case.

Investigators say they've been working tirelessly with the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations to establish, and follow up on, any and all leads in this case, but they need the public's help, the hope is that this website will establish that line of communication.

Secret Witness is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the person or persons responsible for Thompson's death. Tipsters can remain anonymous and there are three ways to give information:
