A 57-year-old man climbing Mt. Shasta last week fell hundreds of feet to his death, officials confirmed.

According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, Michael Murphy, of San Carlos, fell 400 feet from the Red Banks area around 6:30 a.m. last Thursday. When the initial call came in Murphy was lying unconscious in an area north of Lake Helen, at about 10,500 feet.

A witness later said Murphy may have fallen 2,000 feet from the Red Banks area.

Three Redding firefighters, along with a doctor were on the mountain and attempted to help Murphy while air medics responded, but Murphy was pronounced dead before he made it to the hospital.

The case is still under investigation and anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office at (530) 841-2900.
