PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A new report shows an Oregon man who killed a California sheriff's deputy last year died from a self-inflicted wound during the ensuing shootout with a police officer.
The finding from the Mendocino County district attorney's office follows contradictory reports over whether Ricardo Chaney died from an officer's bullet or his own.
The report says the police officer shot Chaney in the leg, but it wasn't fatal.
Chaney fatally shot Deputy Ricky Del Fiorentino on March 19 after killing a man in Eugene, Oregon, and carjacking a vehicle.
The report includes details about Chaney's criminal history and mental health.
People who knew Chaney told investigators he had extreme anti-government views and was prone to "apocalyptic thinking."
The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa first reported on the DA's findings.
