The unusual amount of violent crimes in Butte County this weekend has the sheriffs department looking for answers. Following Saturday's shootout in Chico and the Highway 70 shooting that left one dead Monday officials say they are going to be keeping a close eye on the gangs in the area.
"We do not know if there is a connection between those two crimes." says Lt. Al Smith from the Butte County Sheriff's Office. "There is obviously concern that there is ongoing tension in the Asian community so we are worried about that, but we are looking into a connection."
Smith says although the crimes were violent he doesn't think there is any particular gang war in the community.
"I wouldn't characterize it as gang war, but obviously both Chico Police and our department have officers that concentrate on gang crimes. So they are definitely looking into what is going on between the Asian gangs if there is a problem there."
As the investigations into the crimes develop we will be sure to keep you updated.
