The Butte County Coroner has identified a Gridley woman who investigators said may have been killed by her own dogs while trying to keep them from fighting.

Butte County sheriff’s deputies found the body of 57-year-old Maria Torres in her Gridley home on Wednesday afternoon. They were at her house to check up on her because she didn't show up to work

Investigators say Torres likely died of injuries caused by trying to keep her dogs from fighting, noting that the animals had injuries consistent with fighting each other.

The sheriff’s office is also considering other theories about how Torres died, such as from natural causes, and that her wounds were caused after death.

An autopsy hasn't been performed yet. It will help determine the cause of death.
