Audit: LA police misclassified thousands of violent crimes

LOS ANGELES (AP) - An audit has found the Los Angeles Police Department misclassified more than 25,000 violent crimes as minor incidents over the past seven years.

The audit by the department's independent watchdog found the errors meant the number of aggravated assaults reported from 2008 to 2014 would have been 36 percent more than what police reported during that period.

The audit released on Friday blamed the inaccurate statistics on poor training, widespread misconceptions about what amounted to an aggravated assault and an error-prone records system.

The police commission called for the audit after the Los Angeles Times reported last year that hundreds of stabbings and beatings were classified.

In response to that report, Police Chief Charlie Beck launched several reforms aimed at improving the LAPD's crime reporting.
