University Police are investigating an attempted sexual assault that happened around 5:20 p.m. on Saturday Oct.26 by Chico State’s Physical Science Building.
Campus Police say, two unknown men approached the 18-year-old female student while she was sitting outside Meriam Library listening to music. As she began to walk home, one of them continued following her.
As they reached the Physical Science Building, the man allegedly tried to sexually assault the woman, according to the University Police email release.
The female student reacted by grabbing her pepper spray from her purse and spraying him in the face. As he dropped to the ground, the woman ran home and called police. The man is described as a young tall black man with a tattoo under his eye. The woman was not injured during the incident.
Many female students say’s sexual assaults usually occur off-campus, but this recent event puts them on the high alert while on campus. “For it to happen on campus, it’s kind of scary thought to think about…actually,” says one student.
Currently, Lonnie Scott Keith, 41 of Chico, is sitting in the Butte County Jail waiting for his jury trial to begin. Keith is facing three charges of sexual assault that happened in Chico's south campus neighborhood.
University Police are asking anyone with information regarding the attack that happened by the Physical Science building to call 898-5555.
