A man arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery in Cottonwood Wednesday told responding deputies he was “only joking with the clerk.”

Shasta County sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported attempted robbery at the Fourth Street Chevron in Cottonwood around 10:30 p.m.

A deputy arrived and learned the would-be robber fled southbound on Parkway Street. A man matching the description, and later identified as Charles Atmore, was found on Parkway Street near Second Street.

Further investigation revealed that Atmore told the Chevron clerk to go into the back so he could steal items from behind the counter. The clerk told Atmore that he would not do that and asked Atmore to leave the store. Atmore refused to leave, and authorities were called.

After he was arrested, Atmore told deputies he was only joking with the clerk, and it was a misunderstanding. He was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail.
