At approximately 7:35 a.m. this morning Chico Police Officers were dispatched to Lobdell Cleaners on Main Street in Chico regarding a burglary in progress. It was determined the owner entered Lobdell Cleaners to prepare the business for opening. While inside his business, he discovered to unknown male subjects (not employees) in an adjacent room. Upon being discovered by the owner, both subjects fled the business, traveling south toward Park Avenue. The owner chased the two subjects, one of which was seen entering a large vacant building on the north east corner of E. 11th Street and Park Avenue.

The second subject continued running east on E. 11th Street. The owner called police and reported the incident. Officers arrived, securing the vacant building at E. 11th Street and Park Avenue., and Lobdell Cleaners at 1000 Main Street. Officers circulated the area for the second subject who was last seen running east on E. 11th Street but found nothing.

A search of the vacant building revealed one subject hiding on the roof. Due to the age and condition of the building, it was not safe for personnel to access the roof. Chico Fire Department was requested to the scene to assist officers with a ladder. The subject was located on the roof and taken into custody by officers without further incident. The subject was identified as 24-year-old Joshua Preffer. The second subject was not located.

During an interview with Preffer at the Chico Police Department, Preffer confessed to the burglary, according to the department’s press release. Preffer was booked into the Butte County Jail on burglary charges. Chico police concluded there was no property loss, but the incident is still under investigation.
