PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona trial court judge importance denies knowing her live-in boyfriend was a fugitive with a criminal record.

Judge Katherine Cooper of Maricopa County Superior Court declined to be interviewed Tuesday but she released a brief statement saying 52-year-old Michael Kent Krause's background was news to her.

Krause was arrested Jan. 6 at Cooper's home on a December fugitive warrant stemming from a larceny indictment issued in New York City. A court document filed in Arizona in that case identified Krause as a sex offender.

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation records say Krause in the 1980s and 1990s served sentences for crimes that included assault with intent to commit a sex offense.

The judge's relationship with Krause was first reported late Monday by KPHO-TV.
