Area High School students compete in speech competition

Four Durham High School students and one student from the Progressive School House in Chico spoke on the topic "Community Service: What Does it Mean and Why Does it Matter".

The Forest Ranch Lions Club hosted the club level Student Speaker Contest at Durham High School yesterday. All the students presented great speeches with refreshing and useful ideas. They were judged by a panel of three independent judges, Cynthia Cantwell, American Red Cross, Bill Dennison, Author/Speaker and retired CEO California Forestry Association, and Amanda Haydon, CSU Chico Student Life and Leadership program.

Carson Hunt, from Durham High School was selected as the winner. Hunt will now compete in the Zone level contest and has the oppourtunity to keep advancing all the way to the Lions Club state level contest.

At each level the winner is awarded a scholarship and the winner of the state level competition will have won $21,000 in college scholarships.
