LOS ANGELES (AP) - Another Republican has joined the race for Barbara Boxer's U.S. Senate seat in California.

Duf Sundheim - a former head of the state Republican Party - says he wants to go to Washington to work for improved schools, more jobs and better roads.

The 62-year-old lawyer made the announcement in a video Wednesday in which he laments the state's poverty rate and criticizes laws that he says choke job growth.

So far the 2016 race is off to a slow start, and early polls show voters are mostly unfamiliar with the contest.

Sundheim become the third little-known Republican to get in.

Democrats in the contest are Attorney General Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez from Orange County.

The primary is in June.

Democrats are strongly favored to hold the seat.
