In a unanimous decision, the Anderson City Council voted Tuesday night to hang a sign with the national motto “In God We Trust” in the city council chambers.
Exactly when and where in the chambers the sign will be placed has yet to be determined, but officials say it will be permanent and prominently displayed.
“In God We Trust” was adopted as the nation’s motto in 1956 and has been displayed on all paper currency since 1957.
In recent years, certain groups of people have objected to the motto’s use, claiming it to be a violation of the first amendment.
