Alleged honey oil manufacturers facing environmental charges

With butane honey oil labs and explosions on the rise, Butte County’s District Attorney says he is sending a message by charging two accused honey oil manufacturers with environmental crimes.

Former Chico State students Gary Dufault and Rex Zimmerman, both 24, were arrested in May after the Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force served a search warrant at their home on Victorian Park Drive in west Chico and found two pounds of butane honey oil, plus evidence consistent with a butane honey oil lab.

The environmental charges stem from the pair’s disposal of butane canisters.

Prosecutors say Dufault and Zimmerman would leave used butane cans in a dumpster near the Paradise Apartments in Chico. Between April 2015 and May 2015 BINTF collected 769 used canisters at the complex.

Both men appeared in court for a preliminary hearing Tuesday, during which an environmental scientist testified about the dangers of used butane cans.

Both men face seven years in prison if convicted of manufacturing honey oil, and another three years for the suspected illegal disposal of the canisters.
