It all began in 2009, when the Lions committee, a group dedicated to serving communities in need, came up with an idea to use the Lions All-star football game as a way to help the greater good.
"We wanted to give back to kids who are challenged with diabetes," said Lions Committee member Bob Treaux.
Soon after, they found a place to execute their gameplan, Camp McCumber in Shingletown, a summer camp just for kids with diabetes.
The Lions committee huddled up agreed to start donating 100% of the proceeds raised at the All-star football game to this camp.
In 4 years since the program started, they've handed off $25,000.
"The money goes to tuition, building cabins, and an education to these kids to be able to use their pumps and balance their blood," said Lions Committee Chairman Dwaine Melton.
"I like it because you get to be with other diabetics and just be yourself and have fun," said Parker Morrison, a diabetic camper.
Today, three of this year's All-stars got to hang out with the campers. They did some arts and crafts, shared some lunch, played some catch and took part in games.
"I mean these kids, you look at them and you wouldn't even be able to tell that they are diabetic. They're running around with high energy, they're coming up to you and giving you high-fives, and it's just a great atmosphere out here," said Lions All-Star Cooper Janusevskis.
For any football player, being selected as an All-star is quite the accolade, but when this year's crop of stand-outs found out that by playing in this Lions game, they're helping the kids at Camp McCumber as well, that just takes the experience to another level.
"It means so much to me to know that every play, every down, that I'm going to be helping out some kids with type on diabetes. It just means a lot, it's a great feeling to have," said Lions All-Star Sam Miller.
"It's my last game so it's going to be a great game no matter what, but doing it for these kids makes me want to go even harder," said Lions All-Star Josh Blummer.
If you'd also like to help the kids at Camp McCumber, you can do so by purchasing a ticket at the gate and attending the Lions All-star game. It will be played Saturday, July 13th at Harrison Stadium in Oroville.
