An alert neighbor helps Butte County Sheriff's deputies snag 3 residential burglars this afternoon. A citizen flagged down Deputy Brian Evans in Palermo about 1pm to report some suspicious activity on Melvina Avenue. The citizen described a white Cadillac parked in front of a home with 3 men carrying items from the house to the car. Deputy Evans was only a couple of blocks away and responded to the area immediately. The Cadillac was able to slip away prior to the deputy's arrival. Deputy Evans went to the home and found that forced entry had been made and the home was ransacked. Deputy Evans broadcast the description of the car over the radio and within minutes Deputy Angelo Tavelli saw the car pulling into a residence on Lincoln Boulevard, about 5 miles away.
Deputy Tavelli made contact with the occupants of the Cadillac and assisted Deputy Evans with the investigation. They determined that this was the same car and individuals that the citizen saw on Melvina Avenue and the car was filled with property from the house.
All three occupants of the car, Anthony Skelly, 27, Samuel Smiley, 24, and Sean Smiley, 21, were arrested for residential burglary and possession of stolen property. Sean Smiley had 2 additional arrest warrants from the Oroville Police Department that were served and Anthony Skelly had the additional charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Investigators say the quick action of the citizen recognizing the suspicious activity and reporting it to the deputy was instrumental in arresting the suspects and recovering the stolen property.
