Alcohol will start flowing at Bidwell Golf Course

Alcohol will soon be flowing at the Bidwell Park Golf Course. The Chico city council voted tonight to allow alcohol sales by a vote of 5-2 with Councilmembers Schwab and Ritter voting against it.

Many were at the meeting tonight in support of alcohol sales at the golf course and now they can have beer while playing a round of golf. Supporters say it comes down to economics. If they can attract more people and get more revenue, then the park will be able to make improvements to the course and make some much needed upgrades.

Park officials say they can now attract nearly 10,000-15,000 additional rounds of golf and bring in new jobs. "We are a non-profit so everything we do and everything we bring in, the extra dollars we bring in from having alcohol at the golf course, goes back into the facility. it allows us to hire more staff, also gives the city a few more dollars in their bank," said Courtney Foster, General Manager for the Bidwell Park Golf Course.

Councilmember Randall Stone brought the idea forward to council and says this is going to being more golfers to the city. "We benefit as a city by alcohol being permitted at the golf course so that we can encourage tournament play to occur and other conferences and the other things that we miss out on. That allows the city to generate revenue from the golf course.”

Park officials say they would be able to improve the irrigation system at the golf course and help with upkeep.

The next step is getting the license from the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control. Then, the golf course will need to do some remodeling and modifications at the golf course in preparation for the sales.
