Shelby Merrifield, 18, of Covelo was seriously injured when her Toyota 4-Runner collided into the rear of a white Chrysler 300 while she was driving southbound on Interstate-5 approaching State Road-44 just before 6:00 a.m.
After the initial collision Merrifield collided with the Chrysler a second time, before she ran into a guardrail. After hitting the guardrail, Merrifield continued south between the north and southbound bridges of I-5 over SR-44 where she then collided with the concrete median on SR-44.
The 4-Runner came to rest on its roof, on the south shoulder of Eastbound SR-44. Merrifield, who had not been wearing a seat belt, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency responders. The passenger of the vehicle, 21-year-old Lucas Case, was able to exit the vehicle through a sunroof and was then taken to Mercy Hospital.
Merrifield was arrested for felony driving under the influence and released to the care of Mercy Hospital for treatment.
Carolyn Urbon, 33, of Redding, a passenger in the Chrysler was also injured.
