The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Mercy Medical Center on behalf of a Redding woman denied a tubal ligation due to the hospital's religious principles.

The lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of Rebecca Chamorro, who is scheduled to give birth at Mercy via Cesarean Section on January 28. Also listed as a plaintiff is ‘Physicians for Reproductive Health,’ a California non-profit organization.

The ACLU told the hospital earlier this month that they would be filing the lawsuit, unless the Catholic Hospital changed its mind.

Mercy Medical Center says its general policy is not to provide sterilization unless necessary for "the cure or alleviation of a present and serious pathology."

A hearing has been scheduled in San Francisco for January 5.
