The Redding Police Department recaptured an AB-109 parolee early this morning after the man led them to the Sacramento River.

Officers responded to reports of a man trying to go through vehicles at the Hilltop Garden Inn at 5050 Bechelli Lane shortly before 4:00 a.m.

According to a press release when officers arrived they found John Wilkinson, 48, of Redding assumed a batting type stance holding a sharpened stick, about the size of baseball bat.

Wilkinson told officers they would have to kill him before he would return to jail. He then ran off to the west toward the Sacramento River, but eventually fell down a steep embankment and then into the river.

Shortly after he fell into the river, Wilkinson exited the river and began to climb back up the embankment, at which time a Police K-9 was deployed. Wilkinson kicked the K-9 in the face several times. Officers eventually used batons to strike and subdue Wilkinson until they were able to place him under arrest.

Wilkinson was booked at Shasta County Jail for felony brandishing a weapon at an officer, felony resisting an officer, and battering a police dog.
