AAA: Low gas prices means more holiday travel

Christmas came early this year for holiday travelers around the country.
Gas prices have been steadily declining since September and AAA is reporting more holiday travel this year.

Gas prices are down 85 cents in Redding compared to December 2013 -- a lot of travelers are saying low gas prices means more christmas cash.

Filling up at the pump just got a whole lot merrier.

"It's like 20 dollars cheaper to fill my car up now, so that's really nice."

Thomas Lang and his family came to Redding from reno for the holidays.
They came by to this Shell station on Hilltop Drive to fill up before heading back home.
Because gas prices are so low, Thomas says he has a few extra goodies lined up for his three-year old son.

"He's gonna get more things in his stocking."

According to AAA, the average price for regular fuel in redding is $2.78.
Last year in December it was $3.60 -- almost a full dollar more.

For frequent travelers like Kevin who drives more than 400 miles a day for work, savings can range between 20 and 40 bucks.

"I'm so happy, I make more money that way."

It's more than just filling up your wallet for one mother-daughter duo.
Today Tina Edgerton taught her mother how to fill her car with gas.

"She thought it takes more gas, I said no, the gas prices are so low it doesn't take 50 dollars to fill your car up anymore."

Tina now lives in Portland, and hasn't seen her family in a few years.
She says if it wasn't for such pocket-friendly prices, she wouldn't have made the trip.

"We filled up a Lexus for $35.50!"

Although gas prices are the lowest they've been since 2009, a Reuters analysis shows airfare is still sky-high.
